A second chance for a priest going through a midlife crisis requires risking everything to witness the most significant event in history.

James Foster is a middle-aged Catholic Priest who's going through a midlife crisis. With unsubstantiated allegations of misconduct shadowing him, James reluctantly takes the advice of his Bishop. Take a temporary teaching assignment at the local university before things turn against him with his congregation.

This is the best course of action the Bishop recommends, as the Archdiocese continues to receive news about sexual misconduct charges.

Upon James arrival in his new position, he befriends Professor Frank Javan. Through a lifetime of scientific study and successful experimentations, Frank has finally perfected a machine that allows him to jump back in time. However the machine only works one-way.

Faced with the reality that his new friend will take the next step and conduct a final test that sends him on a one way trip back in time, James has to consider staying behind and trying to explain Franks disappearance or go with him.

The question they face is what is the one event that is worth risking everything for?

How can a book that includes a ménage a trois, lesbianism, thoughts of fornication/adultery, drinking to excess, and losing one's faith have anything in common with the pivotal event of human history: The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ? Well, with the author's unique perspective they certainly do.

Enter Father James Foster, disgruntled and doubting career Catholic priest who has just been removed from his parish by his Bishop because his flock wants to 'fire' him for his uncaring, unloving, and impatient attitude. The Bishop wants him to cool off by temporarily becoming professor of theology at a local university to take the place of the former professor who died along with a student in a traffic accident with scandalous overtones.

There he meets Kate the beautiful and charismatic manager of human resources and the attraction is almost instantaneous. He also meets young professor Frank Javan, an astrophysics professor and they become fast friends.

Father Foster boards at Professor Javan's home and he hears continuous strange noises coming from the basement at all hours of the night. It seems the brilliant professor is experimenting with time travel and has constructed what he thinks will be a workable time machine.

For much of the book, relationships among Father Foster, Frank Javan, his family, Casey and a widening circle of friends is explained and developed. Everything seems to be progressing 'normally' as Robert and Casey's relationship deepens. And so it appears to all intents and purposes to be a romance involving a priest about to reject his calling....BUT WAIT!

It has not yet begun to get totally WILD. Professor Javan performs painstaking experiments with his time machine involving rabbits and they are profoundly successful. Robert's greatest desire is to go back in time to witness the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Frank agrees to accompany him. The machine is disassembled, shipped to Israel re-assembled and that is where I stop this review for fear of spoilers.

It is an utterly fantastic story, part romance, part science fiction and totally supernatural. The characters are well-developed, their weaknesses/strengths exposed, the science fiction/time travel is explained plausibly and the supernatural? The last few pages must be read with the greatest of care or you, dear reader will get lost. My best compliment to this book is what a film it would make! Whether you are of the Christian faith or not, read it and be blessed in the end.

Thieves Robert Crawson 9781470052638 Books Reviews

This book was amazing I am so very proud of my little brother for writing it he really put into words what his heart felt and can't wait until his next book comes out. Fantastic Job Little Brother. YOur big Sister Regina
I personally know the author and stumbled upon this book. It had me guessing in a few places. I did enjoy the characters and look forward to Mr. Crawson's next book. Two thumbs up.
This was the most boring book I have ever read. Like watching grass grow. The time travel does not happen until the last chapter and was very disappointing ending which was silly and did not make much sense. If you like time travel books do not buy this one. You will be very sorry.
Not being a reader of many fiction books, I was very pleased by Crawson's Thieves. He develops the characters in such a way that the story could develop with many different angles. The main character, James Foster, is tested throughout and his destiny is cleverly intertwined with his inner beliefs as well as his desire to witness 'the event.' Furthermore, the time travel aspects of the novel go into enough detail to drive the story but not confuse the reader. Highly recommended read....
There were some story plots that were "OH MY GOSH" when you read and found out about certain things. The whole time you are reading, wondering, anticipating one particular part of the story direction...while wondering about others. The next to the last chapter, I cried so hard. I was truly caught up and was wrapped in the book every time I picked it up. I read before bed, so I would tell myself just a chapter tonight, got to get up for work and 3 chapters later if not more I would stop reading. I just had to find out more and more. I read the other comments. It is a time travel book, no matter that it happened at the end. The build up to it and story to get to it was awesome.
I greatly enjoyed the story line and characters in Thieves. The book is well written and kept me guessing. I suppose I should have guessed from the title since it didn't seem to fit the story until the very end. I like Science Fiction that relates to real world problems and issues and Thieves certainly did that by carefully following the experiences of the main character as he questioned his faith and searched for answers. To be honest I like 'space opera' Science Fiction as well but it is so much better when the story actually has some meaning.
To me the beauty of Science Fiction is that it allows the author to deal with real world problems where there is no clear solution through ordinary means but by adding a Science Fiction element, in this case time travel, anything becomes possible.
Enjoyable story that moves along well .. The characters are interesting well thought out. I like the blend of academics, religion, sci-fi and history .. Highly recommended
